Overview

Kyō To is a refined Japanese restaurant nestled in the heart of Makati City’s Legazpi Village. Located on the ground floor of Coyiuto House along C. Palanca Street, it offers an authentic taste of Japan without the long flight. The venue exudes a serene yet intimate atmosphere, ideal for food lovers seeking a memorable dining experience grounded in tradition and craftsmanship.

The restaurant's culinary approach centers on a thoughtfully curated set menu, reflecting the best seasonal ingredients and highlighting the richness of Japanese kaiseki dining. One consistent pleasure is the opening course featuring succulent female snow crab, which sets a delicate, refreshing tone with its light jelly vinegar and subtle wakame sea aroma. The journey ends with the legendary grilled Kuroushi Wagyu steak paired with Japanese rice, where every bite speaks volumes — tender, rich, and deeply satisfying, like a quiet moment of reverence.

Kyō To shines brightest through its exceptional seafood offerings. Dishes like the scallop sandwich reveal a nuanced balance of textures and flavors, with pickled cucumber bringing an unexpected, effervescent freshness. The maguro sashimi is visual and sensory poetry, where freshly grated wasabi gently invigorates with a slow, warming finish. The steam abalone soup stands out as a comforting masterpiece, merging chewy, almost crunchy abalone with a citrus twist that uplifts the broth's reserved depth.

Beyond taste, the experience is elevated by the attentive service and culinary artistry that feels both personal and unhurried. Diners are invited to trust the chef’s choice, discovering surprises shaped by available fresh ingredients. This approach fosters a connection to Japan’s seasonal cycles, mirrored in every course. The space itself supports this journey—quiet, understated, letting the food and company take center stage.

Whether celebrating a special occasion or seeking a mindful pause, Kyō To appeals to those who appreciate refined Japanese gastronomy with subtle emotion woven through each bite. It suits diners who value quality over quantity, ambiance over distraction, and craftsmanship over convenience. Reservations are advisable due to limited seating, emphasizing its exclusivity and dedication to maintaining an intimate dining rhythm.

In sum, Kyō To is not just a meal but a soulful experience: from the smoky sweetness of the grilled madara fish to the melt-in-your-mouth grilled oyster that evokes nostalgic memories, each dish invites a moment of stillness and gratitude. For anyone longing for a genuine connection to Japanese flavors crafted with heart and precision, Kyō To stands as a beacon in Metro Manila’s culinary landscape.

Disclaimer: I don't like taking food pics because I suck at taking them and excel at eating instead. However, I do like taking notes of the whole experience. I learned my lesson from last time since my handwriting was hard to read -- so I type my notes this time. Attached are screenshots of the notes I took each time the dish arrived. This is also not a sponsored post. It just so happens that whenever there is an occasion to celebrate or something to heal, I go to my favorite hospital (Kyo To) with my favorite "doctors" (the chefs and staff are the best). Love that I don't even need to fly out to Japan for me to taste it. EDIT: Just realized my notes might be hard to read. Here are some snippets --- SECOGANI (Female Snow Crab) The jelly vinegar melts softly and the tiniest eggs pop one by one. The wakame gives you just a hint of the sea — not salty, just comforting. SCALLOP SANDWICH My first bite didn’t even go to my stomach — it went straight to my heart. I actually asked myself, how could this even be a scallop?!? The pickled cucumber tasted like someone fried water balloons of Evian. MAGURO SASHIMI The plate looked like a neat tray of someone’s favorite belongings. The freshly grated wasabi traveled through my nose like a slow cigarette exhale.Toro felt almost sacrilegious to eat; Akami was the perfect first chapter. ABALONE SOUP The broth felt like what someone would give you when you needed to cry but had no tears left. The fried abalone tasted like pulpo — chewy, slightly crunchy — and lemon changed everything. GRILLED OYSTER The aroma transported me to my grandaunt and the Japanese restaurants of my childhood. It melted in my mouth like bone marrow. GRILLED MADARA Smoky sweetness, a slight crunch outside, and then the inside just fell apart. At this point, all I could do was whisper thank You. WAGYU + RICE Even the rice was glorious — sticky, shiny, like an anime scene. Probably could be placed in a museum. By the time I reached the wagyu, I already forgot my sadness. It felt like a prayer. A mini emotional reset.

⭐ 5-Star Review (Warm & Detailed) Kyoto Japanese Restaurant exceeded all my expectations! Their sashimi is incredibly fresh and melts in your mouth, and the ramen broth is rich and comforting. I also loved their rice toppings—simple but full of flavor. The highlight of the night was definitely the teppanyaki show. The chef’s skill and showmanship made the experience fun and memorable. If you’re craving authentic Japanese food with great ambience and service, Kyoto is a must-visit!

We went for the first seating for dinner and got the omakase. It was the best meal I’ve had in ages. I absolute loved all the food items and was astounded at the flavors and texture. Pure deliciousness talaga. I wish I could give a certain favorite but they were all so good. Maybe it’s a tie between the scallop sando and the grilled Hokkaido crab. Everything was just so good.

With Kyo-to, you never know what to expect because the chef decides what to serve, based on what’s available. However, it seems what’s consistent are the snow crab at the start and wagyu steak at the end, both are very good. We were told you can also ask for sukiyaki. I think this is still the best kaiseki meal in town. Be sure to make a reservation a week before, because seating is limited.

I had a really great experience at Kyo-to Makati! The way they serve the food is impressive beautifully presented and thoughtfully prepared. The portions may be small, but the quality makes it absolutely worth it. Each dish is packed with flavor and you can tell it’s made with the highest standards. For the price, it’s very reasonable considering the quality of every meal. Definitely a place I’d recommend for anyone who enjoys authentic, high-quality Japanese dining.

Feb2025 Japanese Kaiseki style restaurant that serves highly traditional and seasonal rotating menus based on locally sourced main ingredients from regional Japanese areas. The dishes are very creatively thought of with a high degree of attention to all details of the culinary experience. The tastes are very much compatible and attuned to a matured palette based on very tradional combinations but of very high standards. The plating and presentation is profoundly beautiful and simple. The service staff are highly attentive, friendly and welcoming. The interiors are bright, clean, and exemplary in the little touches of decor, seamlessly transporting you to a very genteel side of Japan. Private rooms are available for a max of 5/10/20 diners. Though one must pay much to have this exceptional experience (8500++) and do note that advanced reservations are must as well as a reasonable dress code. Ideal for dates and small groups.
